The Midwife Led Unit (MLU) at Princess Royal Hospital, Telford needed to be relocated to a new location adjacent to the consultant-led Women and Children’s unit (CLU). Catfoss were approached by Princess Royal Hospital to supply a bespoke modular facility to accommodate this relocation.
Project Size: 670sqm, Single Storey
The trust had a requirement to relocate the midwife led unit to a new location adjacent to the consultant led Women and Children’s unit (CLU), however budget constraints were in place and access to funding was time limited. With no existing internal space available a new build was required that would be fully HTM and HBN compliant with a physical link to the CLU and crucially be future proof in that a first floor could be added in future to relocate the antenatal scanning department to the same location. That building would also need to be a bespoke shape to fit the available irregular shaped building plot that had been identified.
Cost and timeframe to access funding had precluded traditional build, therefore the Trust engaged with Catfoss to develop a modular build solution. The single storey building with capability to receive a first floor later for relocation of the scanning department could be designed to fit the irregular building footprint whilst accommodating all the core spaces required in the MLU. Once the design had been developed and agreed with the teams at the Trust the building would be manufactured offsite in a factory environment.
While the 16 module, 670m² building was being manufactured in the factory, Catfoss undertook site investigations to identify ground conditions followed by installation of building foundations capable of supporting a two-storey build. In tandem with these works, the required planning and regulatory permissions were also secured after which delivery of the building commenced. From point of order to handover of an HTM/ HBN compliant building took just 5 months.
